Session 4-2 Across the Social Space : working classes (1). 9-10'45 Revisiting the Working-Class Choice of the Necessary Tony Bennett My general concern in this paper is with the consequences of Bourdieu’s engagement with Kant’s aesthetic categories for his approach to survey design and his interpretation of his survey findings in Distinction. However, in lieu of the more familiar concern with Bourdieu’s discussion of the bourgeois aesthetic ethos of disinterestedness, I shall take his account of the working-class choice of the necessary as my route into these questions. There will be four main aspects to my discussion. First, I shall show how, when considered in relation to Bourdieu’s account of the popular aesthetic, these two - the working-class choice of the necessary and the popular aesthetic – constitute a shifting and unstable counterfoil to his account of the aristocracy of culture, taking on different values and meanings depending on whether they are contrasted to th
